Kunming Trip 2026 Day 1 3/6

Back from another trip!  This time we went to Yunnan in China.  Kunming was less than a 4-hour flight away.  As usual, I chose a hotel with a nearby metro/subway station.  Getting there was a breeze (and cheap) from the Airport station.

Stairs at metro stations, again

We settled in and then walked out for dinner.  Relied on Google Translate to figure out what to order heh.  Eventually braised pork rice, chicken with chilli and these local cone-shaped buns called 'wotou' (nest buns) arrived steaming hot.  I had thought the buns would be vegetable-based, but they were mostly carb - the green bun had veggie speckles but the others appeared to contain glutinous rice, corn, taro etc.

First meal at China

The 'Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Archways' area is Kunming's main landmark - a plaza with two giant arches.

Nearby was the largest Mixue outlet I had ever seen.

Where are we again? Oh ya KUN MING

We were full from dinner and didn't get any dessert. Wandered around the area a bit then headed back to our comfy beds.

  1. Trip marathon?💪👍
I don't dare to go China in free & easy tour coz can't read chinese & don't understand their heavy accent. Need to rely on google translate alot. Also have to get a reliable vpn for app support. Too much hassle.

    1. When I was in Beijing back in 2003, I also couldn't read that many characters but I still managed to take a public bus from the hotel to a metro station by observing what locals do and matching the characters shown at the bus stop with characters in the travel guide book.

    2. You have been overseas a lot so going to da Lu on free and easy wouldn't be a challenge for U la. No worries.

    3. Well we have been to Japan and Korea - even as bananas our command of the language can't be worse in China! But I know what you mean... there did seem a lot to do. I relied on chatgpt to set up Wise (I was unfamiliar with the whole concept) and Alipay. eSim was easy, I just bought off Shopee and it comes with vpn. The hotel didn't provide the full address until later - I again relied on chatgpt which gave me some address in chinese which wasn't correct.

    4. Heh yes it does feel like a trip marathon. Luckily I had been rather free at work and had the time to plan the itinerary.

  2. So lovely to see your post, Stacy. Beautiful photos, looks like a great time. Here in Montreal, Canada we have a China Town with those arches at the entrance. Thank you so much for sharing your journey.

    1. Come to think of it, many China Towns have some kind of arch, including the one in Kuala Lumpur.
